Know what you are publishing

Flipbook Studio creates a ZIP containing an HTML reader and its media assets. The educator format also includes a learning companion. It does not create a store, collect customer payments or apply access restrictions. This test assembler requires numbered text, audio and visuals even for a music-led project; use the text as lyrics, credits or accompanying writing, and MP3 files as the page audio.

Paid download: customers buy a file they can save. Paid browser access: customers sign in to view a hosted release. The second option needs access controls covering both the reader and its media. Decide which experience you want before selecting a platform.

Publishing routes to explore

Route 01

A straightforward paid download

Payhip or Gumroad

Sell an illustrated story, art album, magazine issue or multimedia release as a downloadable product. Payhip supports arbitrary file uploads and purchase delivery; Gumroad offers digital products and memberships. [1] [3] [4]

Suggested approach: start with a single issue or release. Upload the assembled ZIP as the product file where accepted, add a preview, and explain that buyers must extract the package and open index.html. Test the complete purchase and playback process before launch.

Compatibility and limits: A file store delivers your reader; it does not automatically run the HTML reader inside its storefront. A downloaded copy remains available on the buyer’s device.

Route 02

A monthly scene magazine

Patreon, Payhip or Gumroad memberships

Build a recurring publication around local music, skating, art, interviews, photography or a specialist scene. These services offer membership routes; Patreon also supports ZIP attachments for one-time digital products. [2] [4] [5]

Suggested approach: publish a free preview, then offer monthly issues to paying members. Give each issue its own release number and archive entry. State whether membership includes all back issues, only new issues, or a selected collection.

Compatibility and limits: Decide what cancelled members keep. A subscriber who downloaded an issue can retain that copy. Check each platform’s current delivery and membership settings before promising archive rules.

Route 03

An independent publication on your domain

Ghost plus suitable media delivery

Ghost supports free, members-only and paid-members-only posts. It is a candidate for an editorial publication with newsletters, public previews and a paid archive. [6]

Suggested approach: use Ghost for the magazine’s editorial pages and membership experience. Add a separate download service or an authenticated media host for the assembled reader as needed. Treat the HTML reader integration as a project to configure and test.

Compatibility and limits: Protecting a post does not by itself prove that linked or embedded files are private. Check unauthenticated access to the reader, images, audio and video. This is not a one-click ZIP import recommendation.

Route 04

An indie art book or experimental release

itch.io

itch.io supports downloadable books, comics and soundtracks as well as browser-based HTML projects. It also documents restricted access and quantity-limited rewards. [7] [8] [9]

Suggested approach: list the finished package as a paid download. For a free browser preview, follow the HTML5 upload instructions and place index.html at the ZIP root rather than inside the outer book folder. Test media and fullscreen controls in the embed.

Compatibility and limits: itch.io’s HTML5 documentation says browser projects take payments as donations; use paid downloadable files when a purchase is required. Browser hosting has file and size constraints. Do not assume the free preview is paywalled.

Route 05

A music-led release with visual extras

Bandcamp

Bandcamp supports album bonus downloads, including ZIP files, and artist subscriptions. Consider it when the music is the primary release and the visual package is a companion. [10] [11]

Suggested approach: publish the music using Bandcamp’s normal album workflow and investigate including your visual reader as a bonus ZIP, subject to the current upload rules. An illustrated booklet, artist notes or visual narrative can accompany the album.

Compatibility and limits: This is not native hosting of the interactive reader. Most music file types are excluded from bonus items; upload songs as normal tracks or bonus tracks. Confirm that a multimedia ZIP containing audio is permitted before using it as a bonus.

Route 06

A release alongside merchandise

Shopify with digital delivery

Shopify’s digital-product tooling supports downloadable files and supported external content links. This is a candidate when a publication belongs in a larger store with prints, clothing, decks or other merchandise. [12]

Suggested approach: add the assembled ZIP as a digital product using the delivery app. Test a paid order and its download instructions. Create separate listings or a suitable bundle workflow for a digital issue and physical merchandise.

Compatibility and limits: An ecommerce checkout does not automatically host or protect the interactive reader. Subscription archives and in-browser access may need additional integrations. Compare the full store and app costs.

Route 07

Paid browser access or a timed collection

Your own website with authenticated media hosting

Custom hosting gives you control over one-release purchases, recurring membership or access that ends on a stated date. Cloudflare R2 provides temporary access links for individual stored objects; application code must manage purchases and entitlements. [13]

Suggested approach: have a developer connect checkout to verified payment events and a server-side access record. Gate the reader and every protected media request, and test expiry, cancellation, recovery and refunds. Keep the storage private.

Compatibility and limits: A public static website is not a paywall. Expiring download links do not revoke files already saved. Temporary object links alone do not provide a complete publication membership system. This requires development and ongoing maintenance.

Route 08

A separate bookstore edition

Kindle Direct Publishing or another ebook channel

Consider a conventional ebook edition when you want distribution beyond a browser-based multimedia package. KDP documents EPUB and other supported manuscript formats, including some HTML inputs. [14]

Suggested approach: prepare a separate edition using the text and images, adapt its layout, and validate it in the retailer’s preview tools. Keep the interactive release available through a compatible delivery route.

Compatibility and limits: An accepted HTML manuscript format does not mean this JavaScript reader will function there. Do not upload this ZIP assuming its player, audio, video and educator companion will survive conversion. This assembler does not currently export EPUB or print-ready editions.

Make “limited” mean something clear

A limited sales window, a fixed number of purchases, an exclusive version and time-limited viewing are different offers. State which one you mean. Selling only one copy does not technically prevent copying or automatically transfer copyright. Ending a sale does not remove copies buyers already downloaded. For an online-only release, access controls can end future access but cannot guarantee that no recording or copy was made.

Suggested edition wording: “50 numbered purchases offered” or “Available to purchase until the stated release deadline.” For timed viewing, publish the exact access period and whether downloads are included. Do not describe a downloadable ZIP as self-expiring.

A practical first release

  1. Choose one clear product. For example, a scene magazine issue containing photo essays, interviews, original music and artist notes.
  2. Test the finished reader. Extract the ZIP, open index.html and check all pages, sound, video and external links. Test on the devices you intend to support; mobile handling of downloaded HTML packages may vary.
  3. Choose delivery before checkout. A downloadable desktop package is simpler to test. A seamless mobile browser experience generally calls for hosted media and a tested player.
  4. Prepare the listing. Include a cover, short preview, description, file size, compatibility, extraction instructions and access terms. Make your refund/contact arrangements clear.
  5. Publish through a suitable platform. Follow its current upload and payment instructions. Use its test checkout or a controlled purchase to verify the customer journey.
  6. Promote the experience. Share a preview and a direct purchase link through your own channels. A storefront alone does not guarantee discovery.

Use material you have permission to publish and sell, including music, photographs, artwork and interviews. Agree on contributor credits and any revenue split before release. This guide suggests distribution options; it does not verify rights or provide legal advice.
